The sound that will be involved in my production work is exploring the emotions of the characters as well as creating the right sense of atmosphere with the use of music. However, I do not want to turn each scene in to some sort of music video kind of feeling with music playing in the background and just actions with no dialogues. The major sound in this production will be mainly diegetic sound where the audience will be able to hear the sound that is being played on screen. The music or sound I will be using will be play through live instruments, the keyboard, where my character will be expressing his feelings through the music being played on the keyboard. A way of expressing the characters feeling through music rather than words. It also creates the mood and atmosphere of happiness, anger and sadness.
The sound that will be use in this production will consider as pretty important to me especially as the production work will not be containing heavy dialogues or speeches but actions, movements and use of diegetic sounds which will be expressed visually. The idea of using music to express the characters feeling and the mood of the scene came through an interest of Korean dramas. With the influence of Korean dramas, I came across a drama called “You’re beautiful” directed by Hong Sung Chang, where music is used in the drama to express a characters feeling, not only this but also a skill of approaching to another character without the use of dialogues but music. This type of technique has been used throughout most of the 16 episodes. After watching this drama and impressed with the sound being used, I wanted to explore a similar technique for my production work but rather than singing a song, I have gone for just music instrument on its own without vocals. As an audience point of view, watching the korean drama “You’re beautiful”, I was able to feel the atmosphere of the scenes more stronger with the music being played by the characters. It makes the scene more realistic and puts the audience mind more into the story and gives the audience a rough guide of how or what the characters emotion is saying or feeling.
To conclude my sound design for my production work, I have attached a few clip examples from the Korean drama “You’re Beautiful” of how the sounds were used in the drama.
